Abstract

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most common life-threatening emergencies of the gastrointestinal tract in the neonatal period. Aim: To study possible correlation between duration and mode of oxygen therapy and necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants Methods: This study was carried out in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Cairo University Children hospitals (CUCH) and NICU of Luxor general hospital and was designed as retrospective case control study enrolling thirty Preterm infants ({u2264} 34 weeks) with definite NEC and thirty preterm infants with matched gestational ages. Every patient underwent full history taking, monitoring of clinical and laboratory findings, monitoring of outcome and recording of oxygen therapy details. Results: sepsis was significantly correlated with development of NEC (P value=0.000), blood transfusion was significantly correlated with development of NEC (P value=0.012). Whereas oxygen therapy and mode of oxygen delivery were not correlated with development of NEC (P value=0.272).Conclusion: Duration and mode of oxygen therapy did not correlate with development of NEC. Whereas sepsis and blood transfusion significantly correlated with development of NEC in preterm infants. Moreover lower gestational age and high FIO2 were correlated to adverse outcome
