Abstract

Background: Hand eczema is an inflammatory disorder that affects the skin of the hands. Its estimated prevalence is 4% of the general population. It is the most common occupational skin disease and it causes a profound reduction in the patient{u2019}s quality of life. It commonly presents by erythema, edema, vesicles and erosions in its acute stage, that progresses to lichenification, scaling, hyperkeratosis and fissures in the chronic stage. It is a multifactorial disease that can be caused by contact irritants, allergens and atopic predisposition. Hand eczema runs a chronic relapsing course, there are many available treatment modalities for it, with topical steroids representing the mainstay treatment. Alitretinoin (pan-retinoic receptor agonist) has proven efficacy in the treatment of recalcitrant chronic hand eczema. Despite its proven efficacy, the precise mechanism of its action in hand eczema has not been elucidated yet. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the expression of RAR and RXR in the skin of patients with hand eczema, to elucidate their possible role in the pathogenesis in hand eczema
