Abstract

Some natural products of plant origin are a rich source of cancer chemothutic drugs, and exhibited low toxicity to normal tissues; Family brassicaceae (cruciferae) is one of the most important plant kingdoms, which includes a wide variety of medicinal plants. Erucaria pinnata (Viv.) is a wild annual plant growing in north-western coastal Region. The present study as well to investigate the nutritive value, phytochemical constituents and the cytotoxic activity of methanolic 70% plant extract (E1) and its isolated active compound (rutin) against liver carcinoma cell line (Hep-G2) in vitro and also investigate their chemopreventive efficacy in male rats bearing chemically induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), using diethylnitrosamine (DEN) (200mg/Kg. b.wt., i.p, single dose), after two weeks, animals received carbontetrachloride (CCl4) (3ml/Kg. b.wt., SC, once a week for 6 weeks) and the experiment continued for 44 weeks. The chemical analysis of E. pinnata revealed that, this plant has low nutritive value due to the presence of low concentration of principle phyto-nutrients. The phytochemical screening of the plant extracts showed presence of alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, saponins, phenolices and flavonoids
