Abstract

Background: There are frequent anti-epileptic drugs used in management of epilepsy. Anti-epileptic drugs may have some complications on bone and vitamin D metabolism. Although a large portion of the population has been described as having low levels of vitamin D, individuals with epilepsy are at higher risk for vitamin D deficiency than their health counterparts. Despite these findings, its relationship with epilepsy is unclear and vitamin D levels are not routinely checked or treated in patients with epilepsy. Material & methods: A cross-sectional clinical (seizure types, dosage and duration of AED treatment) and blood testing (calcium, phosphorus and 25-OHD ) study was accomplished in 62 epileptic children (AED group: 23 receiving Valproic acid, 20 receiving levetiracetam and 19 receiving carbamazepine) and a control group 64 healthy subject. vitamin D deficiency (VDD) has been defined as a 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25- OHD) level less than 20ng/mL and level less than 10ng/mL has been defined as severe deficiency , and those with values equal or > 20ng/ml were not deficient
