Abstract

Background: Migraine is unilateral, pulsating, moderate to severe headache and associated with nausea, vomiting, photo and phonophopia. Migraine commonly associated with vestibular symptoms due to involvement of central and peripheral vestibular systems. Objective: To evaluate vestibular function in migraine and vestibular migraine and to assess the value of c-VEMP, o-VEMP and caloric irrigation as a diagnostic tool for vestibular dysfunction in migraine and vestibular migraine. Methods: 50 adult patients with migraine, 22 of them were had vestibular symptoms. Results were compared with 50 normal age and gender matched controls. Full migraine and vertigo history was taken; full neurological examination and bed side examination of dizzy patient were done. Results: Migraine and VM patients showed significantly delayed P13 N23 latencies of c-VEMP as well as n1 p1 latencies of o-VEMP. Caloric irrigation testing revealed asymmetrical caloric response and hyperreflexia in migraine and VM. Conclusion:Migraine and especially vestibular migraine have central and peripheral vestibular dysfunction. Migraine patients can exhibit subclinical vestibular deficit even in absence of vestibular complaint
