Abstract This work titled ”Hausa Proverbs: A Stylistic Study”, investigates and analysis the stylistic aspect of Hausa proverbs. This research aims at presenting a linguistic study of a form that belongs to the domain of literature, which is the stylistics of the proverb. The corpus, on which this research is based, comprises one thousand (1000) proverbs current in contemporary colloquial Hausa. It has taken into consideration the phonological, Morphological, Syntactical and Lexical characteristics of Hausa proverbs. It has given emphasis on Stress, Rhyme and Rhythm. Under each of these headings, a lot of items were discussed, such us Vowels; Pitch and juncture; Syllable structure and alliteration. Others include repetition; Frequency; Inversion of word order; Juxtaposition; Unusual Structures; Deletion and symmetry. The Research has given a stylistic and linguistic analysis of Hausa proverbs as a departure from the traditional classificatory treatment; it has at the same time, unearthed some areas that need to be investigated. Some of these are the changes that have taken place in proverbs, in form and content, and borrowings from the standard language which have emerged in the colloquial in different forms |
