Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic validity of high-resolution ultrasound in assessment of hand tendon injuries. Subjects and methods: A prospective observational cohort study enrolling 30 patients who were diagnosed clinically to have hand tendon injuries either preoperative or postoperative, their age was ranging from 5-64 years with (a mean± SD 31.43± 12.19 years ); 23 male patients (76.7%)and 7 females (23.3%) were evaluated by high resolution ultrasound examination. Results: As regarding the ultrasound findings in the studied cases, 17 cases (56%) had tendon injury, in 10 cases (33.3%) the tear was complete, in 2 cases (6.66%) tendon callus was detected, 13 cases (43.3%) had post operative tendon integrity, 15 cases (50%) had post operative abnormal motion in dynamic study, in 2 cases (6.66%) foreign body was detected ,10 cases (33.3%) had gap between the torn tendon ends, in 4 cases (13.33%) re-rupture was detected ,there was retraction of tendon ends in 2 cases (6.66%), tendon pseudomass was detected in 2 cases (6,66%) and in 2 cases (6.66%) associated nerve injury was detected. Conclusion: Ultrasound can provide a diagnostic modality for predicting the prognosis, diagnosis and management of hand tendon injuries
