Abstract

In the last few years, mobile devices and applications have come to play an integral part in billions of users{u2019} lives around the world. This diffusion of mobile devices and applications, along with the fact that users are often not trained to use mobile applications, make the user experience an essential in the success of mobile devices and applications. Although user experience has a wider scope than usability, it has not received the same level of attention. Often, achieving usability goals are taken to mean a positive user experience, which is not necessarily the case. That is because it is hard to characterize mobile application user experience due to its multi-dimensionality. Therefore, there is a lack of detailed, widely accepted guidance for enhancing mobile application user experience as the existing studies have some limitations. In addition, there are a few studies that discuss Egyptian users culture as one of the user characteristics that affects user experience. The aim of this thesis is to develop a framework for characterizing user experience for mobile applications and to shed light on some of the Egyptian users{u2019} cultural characteristics that should be taken into consideration in mobile application development. Firstly, we discuss the relationship between usability and user experience. Secondly, we propose a framework for addressing and characterizing mobile application user experience with a focus on identifying its elements and influencing elements that shape the user experience of mobile applications, and then we discuss Egyptian user culture characteristics. Finally, we validate the proposed framework through a case study
