Abstract

Conjunctivitis, an inflammatory disorder of the membrane that covers the eyelid, has multiple causes, the most common of which is the bacterial infection. Although multiple bacterial species were isolated from inflamed conjunctivas, no direct causality has been established. Being continuously exposed to the environment, the conjunctiva has its own microbiota, which has not been fully explored since many eye-associated microbes are yet to be cultured. Here, we aimed to investigate the eye microbiota{u2019}s role in the development of conjunctivitis by comparing conjunctival swabs from infected vs. uninfected eyes from the same patients. To this end, we sampled 128 pairs of conjunctival swabs from healthy and infected eyes of 53 patients and eleven healthy controls. from these swabs, DNA was extracted and subjected to16S rRNA amplicon sequencing using Illumina technology. The obtained sequence reads were processed, analyzed, and compared to representative Human Microbiome Project samples by QIIME-1 software. Subsequent statistics were performed by PhyloSeq and other packages of the R-statistical platform. The obtained sequences varied in number, with an average of 6531 sequence reads per sample
