Abstract

Zinc is a vital micronutrient in humans and its deficiency in children can thwart their growth and development, compromise their immunity and cognitive function. However, there is a paucity of studies about the effect of zinc supplementation on cognitive and nutritional status. This study is an attempt to quantify the impact of zinc supplementation on cognitive performance and nutritional status of preschool children. The aim of study: Was measuring prevalence of zinc deficiency among studied group and the effect of zinc supplementation on improving cognitive and nutritional status among preschool children in Nikla Village at Giza. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental (pre-post) intervention study included 50 preschool child coming to family medicine center clinic in Nikla village at Giza during January 2018. A self-administered questionnaire was used, it included sociodemographic data, FFQ, 24 hr. recall and measure the serum zinc and IQ test before and after 6 months zinc supplementations and follow up. Data was collected, revised and entered using statistical package SPSS version 17
