Abstract

Social Network Analysis (SNA) is an interdisciplinary methodology from graph theory, mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Its main concern is the relationships that link between the nodes or actors within the network. However, it does not ignore the properties of the nodes themselves. In this thesis, the aim is to provide an extensive exposition of the main concern of SNA, its classifications, definitions, measures, and algorithms in a unified coverage or treatments. This is in addition to determining the most suitable approach of SNA for the application of water resources management in Nile basin countries. The thesis starts with brief taxonomy of the methodology of SNA, with mentioning the reasons behind focusing on the graph representation approach. Social Network Analysis is classified into three approaches: semantic approach for social network analysis, data mining approach for social network analysis, and graph representation approach for social network analysis. The graph analysis also has a significant role in analyzing either any published text or large data set. However, it is not sufficient to conduct this analysis as it should be combined by data mining techniques or semantic web technologies to get a comprehensive analysis
