Abstract

Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is achronic arthritic condition of unknown cause in children under 16 years of age. Uveitis is the most frequent extra-articular manifestation of JIA. Early identification of predictors of uveitis can help to improve screening protocols for routine examination to protect children from visual loss. Aim of the Work: The aim of the study is to identify predictors for the occurrence of uveitis in Egyptian children with JIA. Methods: This is a cohort study in which 120 children diagnosed as having JIA will be divided according to presence of uveitis into uveitic and non uveitic group, demographic data and laboratory investigations were analyzed for their predictive value for the onset of uveitis. Results: Thirty four children (28.3 %) were diagnosed with chronic anterior uveitis. Young age of disease onset ({u2264} 5 years), presence of ANA, elevated ESR at disease onset & during course of illness appeared to be predictive factors for uveitis development (P 0.024, P 0.001, P 0.016, P 0.016 respectively)
