Abstract

Microbial contamination of cosmetic preparations presents a major public health threat. Also, most of the known preservatives have serious consumer side effects. In the present study, six types of cosmetic products, without preservatives, as well as their 77 formulating raw materials, were tested. Pathogenic bacteria isolates from the final product and their formulating raw materials were isolated and their clonal relatedness was tested by random amplified polymorphic DNA technique. The bacterial contaminants, isolated from final products, were not always clonally related to those from raw materials. The use of gamma radiation in microbial decontamination of cosmetics was studied and the required decontamination dose was calculated. The possible use of Zink oxide Nano particles (ZnO NP) as a preservative was tested using challenge test. The effect of gamma radiation on the antimicrobial activity of ZnO NP was tested. Application of sterilization dose of 10.9 kGy totally eliminated the microbial contamination from final cosmetic products. ZnO NP was superior to other commonly used preservatives in all tested cosmetic preparations. They pass the challenge test in all types of tested preparations. Gamma irradiation enhanced their antimicrobial activity. Upon storage, ZnO NP were effective in maintaining the microbial count of the product within the acceptable range and their activity was enhanced by gamma irradiation. Therefore, the gamma radiation offers an effective process in the improvement of the microbiological quality of cosmetics. Un-irradiated and gamma irradiated ZnO NP can be used as alternative to commonly used preservatives
