Abstract

Background:Traumatic dental injury (TDI) has become a worldwide dental health problem affecting both primary and permanent teeth of children and adolescents. The aim of this study was tocollect and analyze data about incidence of TDIs in primary dentition and to assess the types and causes of TDIs in a group of preschool children attending dental hospital of Cairo University. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out over a period of one year to determine incidence of TDIs in primary teeth withsample consisted of all patients up to 7 years old attending the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Cairo University.Clinical and radiographic examinations were conducted on each patient. The type of dental injury was recorded according to Andreasenclassification. Results:A total of 321 patients, 194(60.4%) boys and 127(39.6%) girlscame with 547 traumatized primary teeth. The highest frequency was among 2-4 years children as they accounted for 39.2%. Falls were the most common cause of TDIs accounting for 74.4%.The most common type of injury in dental fractures was uncomplicated fractures involving enamel and dentin (35.9%).Avulsion was the most common luxation injury (27.4%). Conclusion: In spite ofthe low incidence of dental in preschool childrenattending the Department of Pediatric Dentistry,TDI in primary dentition should receive careful attention. It is highly recommended to plan campaigns targeting parents, children, and medical/dental care providers that stress the importance of preventing dental trauma and treating it promptly
