Abstract

The relationship between asthma and thyroid disease provides indirect evidence for a role of thyroid hormones in maintaining airway function. Thyroid disease and asthma, both being common conditions, occasionally occur together.Aim of this work was to elucidate the relationship between the thyroid state and asthma. As well as to study the relation between thyroid state and other mediators of asthma pathogenesis in sensitized guinea pigs. The results of the present study showed that, euthyroid Sensitized non-treated guinea pigs showed significant increase in: bronchoconstrictor effect of acetylcholine, histamine and adenosine on airway resistance and decrease relaxant effect of salbutamol. Moreover significant increase in BAL fluid total leukocyte count, TNF alpha and IL1Ý . In-vitro studies showed significant increase in contractile response of isolated tracheal rings to acetylcholine, histamine and adenosine and In resistant cases of asthma, accordingly it is recommended to assess the thyroid function being both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism could worsen asthma. Moreover they might affect the therapeutic effect of the classic treatment of asthma including beta adrenergic stimulant, leukotriene modifiers and corticosteroids
