Abstract

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common disease in the pediatrics field, which is associated with central auditory processing deficits. Early identification of this deficit is important for optimum intervention and improvement of the quality of life and scholastic achievements. Objective: To assess behavioral central auditory processing and auditory memory functions in children with previous history of chronic otitis media with effusion who were treated with ventilation tubes (VT) and to compare the test results with their normal peers. To assess behavioral central auditory processing and auditory memory functions in children with previous history of chronic otitis media with effusion who were treated with ventilation tubes (VT) and to compare the test results with their normal peers Sixty children of both genders were enrolled in this study and divided into 30 children with history of chronic OME in early life, who were treated with VT, and 30 children age and gender matched control group. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups according to age; subgroup a: age ranging from 8-10 years, subgroup b: age ranging from 10-12 years. All children were subjected to full history taking, basic audiological evaluation, Auditory Fusion Test (AFT), Pitch Pattern Sequence Test (PPST), Duration Pattern Sequence Test (DPST), Dichotic Digit (DDT),and auditory memory tests
