Abstract

Different anesthetic techniques may have different effects on the immune response of patients undergoing the same type of surgery. The effect of anesthetics per se on the immune system has taken a lot of attention. Various anesthetics have been suspected of impairing various functions of the immune system either directly, by disturbing the functions of immune {u2013} competent cells, or indirectly by modulating the stress response. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of ultrasound-guided combined femoral and sciatic blocks versus epidural and total intravenous anesthesia on the immune response of oncologic patients undergoing lower limb surgeries by evaluating serum IL6 and IL10. The study proved that ultrasound-guided combined femoral and sciatic blocks preserve various immunologic indices better than those conducted with epidural and total intravenous anesthesia (by significant increase of IL 10 and non-significant increase of IL 6) also decreased the post-operative pain and opioid consumption
