Abstract

The optimal technique for fixation of the Receiver Stimulator package and intra-cochlear electrode during implantation remains an evolving concept. In this study, post-operative radiological assessment by high resolution CT and audiological assessment by telemetry and impedance were done for 120 child implanted with different types of implants and electrodes. The surgical technique described here is a simple and secure method of cochlear implant surgery without any foreign body materials. It is a cost and time saving procedure for implantation of the device as there is no need for additional materials or complicated suture or screw fixations. Slight device migration was detected over the edges of drilled pocket in 9 cases (7.5%) while partly basal electrode migration was detected in 5 cases (4.1%) without any symptoms or re-intervention needed. The results of this study are in good agreement with those of other authors where a tight sub-periosteal pocket alone provided adequate fixation for a receiver-stimulator through at least 1 year of follow-up, as well as reports stability of the intra-cochlear electrode position over time without fixation methods .However, this study documents that migration of both device and electrodes occur even without certain complaints
