Abstract

Background:Brain natriuretic peptides are well-established markers for heart failure in the general population. Aim of Study is to compare perioperative changes in BNP in children undergoing open heart surgery and to evaluate effect of CPB on BNP levels.Materials AND Methods:We conducted a prospective observational study on 37 childrenin Cairo university children hospital who underwent open heart surgery for congenital heart disease. Pre and 24 hrs. postoperative BNP levels were measured using quantitative CMIA technique for BNP. The patient’s demographic data, hemodynamic and low CO parameters, bypass and ischemic times, inotropic score, MV duration and ICU stay were analyzed. Results:In the current study, there was a significant p-value of total mean difference between pre and postoperative BNP, HR, systolic and diastolic Bps. In addition, there was a significant correlation between postoperative BNP and inotropic score, core-peripheral temp. and mechanical ventilation duration. Conclusions:Brain natriuretic peptides determinations might be a useful tool for early detection of LCOS to clinicians caring for infants and children after surgical intervention for congenital heart disease
