Abstract

Secondary caries is considered the main reason for restoration failure in primary and permanent dentitions. Nowadays, dental restorative materials are required not only to remineralize the demineralized tooth structure, but also to prevent and inhibit the secondary caries. Although, compomer is a commonly used pedodontic restoration, yet, it does not prevent or inhibit secondary caries owing to the small amount of fluoride released and lack of antibacterial activity. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the antibacterial activity of compomer filled with 15 wt% freeze-dried 2Aloe Vera encapsulated by chitosan nano-spheres3, and to evaluate the solubility and surface roughness of compomer, as well. The Aloe Vera filler encapsulated by freeze-dried chitosan nano-spheres was prepared by the 2Ion gelation method3. characterization of the freeze-dried powder was carried out by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to evaluate the encapsulation of Aloe Vera by chitosan carrier and by Transmission electron microscope (TEM) to obtain the range of filler particles size. The FTIR spectra revealed that the peaks for both Aloe Vera and chitosan were observed with no absent or shifted bands. TEM micrographs showed uniform spherical particles, in the range of 114-890 nm, of chitosan around Aloe Vera
