Abstract

0bjective: This study aims atassessing the effect of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia {u2265} 20 mg/dl on developing neurological system by auditory brain stem response (ABR) at age of 3 months, and Bayley III scale at age of 1 year.Methodology: 50 newborn babies (males and females) with unconjugated Hyperbilirubinemia {u2265} 20mg/dl beginning during first week of life and admitted to NICU of Elmonira hospital-Cairo University with gestational age {u2265} 36 weeks and weight {u2265} 2.5kg.All were subjected to ABR at age of 3 months, and Bayley III scale at age of 1 year.Control group of healthy cross matched infants for age and number with the cases were sub jected to Bayley III scale at 1 year. Results:The most frequent cause of severe hyperbilirubinemia in this study is ABO incompatibility and it represent 40% of cases. There is a statistically significant correlation between high level of total serum bilirubin and high bilirubin albumin ratio and BIND. It was found that there was relationship between serum bilirubin and ABR outcome.ABR is affected in 22% of cases. Cocchlear implant is mandatoryin 3 cases. It was found that there is a significant difference in Bayley scale between cases and control ,and validated the importance of test in assessing neurodevelopmental state in cases of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia
