Abstract

Introduction: Infections are an important preventable cause of death in cancer patients. Antibiotic resistant bacteria are not controlled or killed by antibiotics. They are able to survive and even multiply in the presence of an antibiotic. They are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Objective: The aim of the current study is to clarify the epidemiologic characteristics, evaluate the risk factors and resistance patterns and assess outcome of multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram negative organisms in children with hematological malignancies at the pediatric oncology department, National cancer institute, Cairo university from January 2014 to December 2014. Patients and methods: Data of 72 episodes of MDR gram negative bacteremias in 65 patients of hematological malignancies were retrospectively analyzed. Hematological malignancies included acute myeloid leukemia (including mixed phenotypic acute leukemia), acute lymphoblastic leukemia, lymphomas and Langerhans{u2019}s cell histiocytosis. Some of patients started treatment with piperacillin tazobactam and others started with Meropenem. Modifications were defined as addition or shifting to other antimicrobials and were made according to clinical condition and/or results of blood culture and sensitivity
