Abstract

Cities are foreseen as complex systems made-up of numerous interrelated elements that shape the Urban Configuration of the city. These elements exist in the form of buildings, streets, and urban spaces, which are considered livable if they are capable of meeting the residents’ expectations while promoting their wellbeing and quality of life. Therefore, the concept of Urban Livability is considered vital in the success of communities as it mainly focuses on improving the quality of life, sustainability, and health while being responsive to the citizens’ needs and desires. Achieving Urban Livability in existing communities would mean adopting a large-scale urban redevelopment project which is both costly and time consuming.
Consequently, this paper addresses the employment of Urban Livability through small scale interventions that are light in application but dynamic in output. This is the theory and practice of Urban Acupuncture; a small catalytic intervention strategy that involves the carrying out a set of small-scale projects during a short period of time that give a maximum impact to the surrounding. Moreover, in regard to socio-spatial parameters, it is very important to understand how people perceive and use the space, the level of interaction, and their walking patterns within an area. These factors are considered a key for urban development; therefore, it is believed that incorporating an analytical approach for particular assessment of certain areas could help realize a much broader scale of benefits. Space syntax is a successful human-oriented technique that has been widely used as a tool for analyzing the spatial layouts and human activity patterns.
The research’s main aim is to evaluate the implementation of Urban Acupuncture and Space Syntax in the development of Alexandria City and to help determine a vision of a livable community. The research is subdivided into five chapters. Chapter one gives an introduction about the research problem, the aims and objectives, and the methodology used during the research. A brief explanation of the conventional Urban development theories, the concept of Urban Livability, and the potential for Urban Acupuncture and Space Syntax to solve the along with their definitions and strategies are illustrated in Chapter two. Chapter three then analyses previous practices of both concepts. Afterwards, Chapter Five represents an analysis and evaluation of the adoption of Urban Acupuncture and Space Syntax principles in the case of Alexandria City, Egypt. Finally, an overall recap of the work stages, the main findings and results, and a set of recommendations directed to the decision-making process were presented in Chapter six in order to enhance the implementation process in existing neighbourhoods
