Abstract

The experimental field work of this investigation was carried out at Nubaria Agricultural Research Station of the Agricultural Research Center (ARC) during 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons. Based on the results of previous experiments conducted by Wheat Research Department of the ARC, two bread wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) cultivars and two lines were used in this investigation. The name, origin and pedigree of those parental genotypes and their leaf rust disease reaction.
In 2014/15 season the four parental genotypes (Gemmieza7, Gemmieza11, Line 1 and Line 2) were grown at Nubaria Research Station in field experiment with two sowing dates for crossing to avoid the differences in flowering dates. Each parent was sown in three rows with 3m long in each planting date. Three crosses have been done to produce F1 grains including; (Resistant x Resistant), (Susceptible x Susceptible) and (Resistant x Susceptible) of the three crosses, namely cross1 (Line1 × Line2), cross2 (Gemmieza7 × Gemmieza11) and cross3 (Gemmieza7 × Line1).
In 2015/16 season, the obtained F1 grains were sown to produce the F2 grains and back crossed with their parents to produce BC1 and BC2. In the same season, the previous crosses were repeated to obtain enough F1 seeds.
In 2016/17 season, the six populations for each cross (Two parents, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2) were arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. The seeds for six populations were sown in rows with 3m long and spacing between rows were 30cm, while it was 15cm between plants. Each plot consisted of 17 rows (one row for P1, P2 and F1, three rows for BC1and BC2 and eight rows for F2) and two border rows with high leaf rust susceptible cultivar (Morocco). All recommended agricultural practices were applied at proper time and the experiment was surrounded by mixed wheat cultivars which were highly susceptible to leaf rust as a spreader.
The collected data were recorded based on an individual plant as; 30 individual plants for each parent and F1, 60 individual plants for each BC, and 210 individual plants for each F2 crosses.
