Abstract

Many people believe that the planet is rapidly fading due to the amount of toxic waste and pollution that has been discharged into the environment. A hotel uses massive amounts of energy and water for its daily operations which puts stress on the environment. Consequently, the hospitality industry worldwide is beginning to become environmentally viable with the execution of green practices into the greater part of their facilities.
The research aims to investigate to what extent there is awareness toward green practices and their implementation level in the Egyptian hotels by comparing between green practices of certified and non-certified hotels. The field research was divided to two online questionnaires based on the collected benchmark. The results concluded that the green certified as well the non-certified hotels had a relatively high level of awareness to go green. There was a significant difference in the implementation level of green practices between them especially in water, waste, energy, pollution and training areas. The cost savings was the most important reason for non-certified to go green while improving the environment image of the hotel was the most important for green certified hotels to go green. Moreover, this research provided recommendations to the Egyptian government, green certified hotels, non-certified hotels and future researches.
