Abstract

The present work aimed to study the autecology and phytochemistry of Senecio glaucus L. (Qorreis) inhabiting the new reclaimed areas of the Eastern Desert nearby Assiut Governorate, Egypt. These areas were visited over two years for study and collection of the plant materials (2018 and 2019). The work was planned to address three main issues: the first was to achieve the phytosociology and associated species to Senecio glaucus. The second issue was to study the phytochemistry of S. glaucus. The third issue was to evaluate some different biological activities of S. glaucus.
The main parameters investigated in this study included:
1) Identifying the associated species to S. glaucus in the new reclaimed areas and the interaction between desert species and field weeds and its effect on the composition of the flora of the region. This was done by analysis the physico-chemical characteristics of soil samples collected from 20 stands, classification and ordination of the recorded matrix using vegetation analyses software. After that, the role of different soil factors on the distribution and composition of the flora in the study area was evaluated.
2) Evaluating the allelopathic effect of extracts of S. glaucus on the seed germination, as well as the mulch of the plant on the growth and some physiological properties of two crop plants (Triticum aestivum and Eruca sativa).
3) Studying of the phytochemistry of S. glaucus where the total phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids and terpenoids were estimated in the shoots, and the essential oils of the fresh shoots and capitula were extracted and subjected to GC/MS analysis compared to the standard materials. Extraction, fractionation, isolation and identification of the different constituents of the aerial parts of S. glaucus. The isolated compounds ware subjected to physical, chemical characterization and spectroscopic studies (IR, ESI, UV, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HSQC and HMBC), in addition to compare their physico-chemical and chromatographic characters with reference samples and literature data.
