المستخلص

This study ”the role of the papacy in converting the Jews of England between 1290 - 1232” aims at shedding light on the papal policy regarding the conversion of Jews in England. This policy reveals itself in the bulls issued by a number of popes, and reflects their attitudes towards the conversion. Besides, the study also addresses the significant role played by the English kings in converting the Jews when they espoused the cause at the behest of the papacy, through accommodating and supporting the converts or harassing the Jews so that they have no choice but to convert to christianity.
We chose this subject specifically because it was never addressed in Arabic before in detail. And although there are some studies dealt with the conversion of Jews to christianity in western Europe, the studies that particularly tackled the role played by the papacy in converting the English Jews are numbered.
And as to the time scope of the study, we chose this period (1232-1290) because the house of the converts, known as Domus Conversum, which played a crucial role in supporting the converts and teaching them christianity, and received considerable attention from the kings of England at that time; Henry III and Edward I, was established in 1232, and as to choosing the year 1290 as an end point for the study, it is because it was the year Jews were expelled from England by Edward I.
