Abstract

The World Health Organization estimates that about 7 million people die annually from air pollutants because polluted air carries fine particles that can cause diseases of the lungs, heart, and blood vessels, as well as cause stroke, lung cancer, chronic obstruction in the airways and respiratory infections so in this study, we discuss in particular, a way to get rid of one of the most dangerous air pollutants, which is sulfur dioxide, because of its serious negative effects on human health and the environment.
In order to maximize the utilization of sulfur dioxide removed from the polluted air, we re-used it in the preparation of organo-sulfonic acid derivatives because of the great economic importance of these derivatives due to the entry of organo-sulfonic acid derivatives into the pharmaceutical industries because of its therapeutic effects and also its use in the manufacture of detergents, dyes and as a catalyst. To achieve the goal of removing sulfur dioxide from the air and exploiting it in the preparation of organo-sulfonic acid derivatives, we have prepared titanium dioxide Nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) and titanium dioxide nanoclusters (TiO2NCs) to use them as photocatalysts. These synthesized Nanoparticles and nanoclusters were characterized by XRD, SEM, DRS,
FTIR, and UV-Vis spectrometer. Then the prepared photocatalysts were used in eco-friendly sulfonation of organic materials (such as thymol and naphthol) to synthesize organo-sulphonic acid derivatives utilizing the
photocatalytic oxidation of SO2 under visible light irradiation conditions by adding thymol or naphthol to the reaction mixture (of 25 mL deionized water, 25 mL ethanol and 0.5 mL of H2O2) and 0.15 gram of the organic precursor material, then 10 ppm concentration of SO2 gas was passed
through the reaction solution with 1.0 L/min flow. The results of eco-friendly synthesis of organo-sulfonic acid derivatives using photonanocatalysts showed that TiO2 nanoclusters exhibited higher catalytic activity than TiO2 nanoparticles and sulfonated compounds were obtained in high quantitative yields. The production yield of sulfonated compounds was ranging between 22%٪ and 30٪ in case of
using TiO2NPs but it was 98% to 99٪in case of using TiO2NCs with 99.04٪ SO2 removal efficiency. So, our innovative method is a new approach to get rid of sulfur dioxide related environmental and health problems and also reuse it in the production of materials with high economic returns.
