Abstract

The current study is concerned with controversial issues in the Middle East and the West and how these events are related to famous politicians, the Iranian General Qassem Solimani and the former President of the United States of America George Walker Bush, as represented in the western media. As for the method of analysis, this study adopts the Appraisal Theory formulated by Martin and White (2005), concerned with the attitude resource and its subsystems. This study is concerned with four editorial articles which extracted from American, British and Canadian newspapers. The current study illustrates how the western press expatiate events and famous politicians in the Middle East and the West and how these issues are differently presented in different newspapers based on the ideological perspectives of their editors. The analysis of research data provides a detailed analysis of the appraisal theory of editorial reports in western newspapers, explores the bias from a linguistic point of view and offers systematic categorization of particular types of evaluation. The study concluded that news is a representation of the editors’ ideologies and it portrays their political, personal and national inclination in spite of their claim to be unbiased and neutral in their approach. The study proves that the editors are so biased and they do not view the reality as it is, and they actually formulate the news according to their perspectives and ideologies.
