Abstract Because of population growth and the increase in the gap between water demand and water supply, the dependence on agricultural drainage water and shallow groundwater is an essential element in the Egyptian water budget. Such dependence on reusing water losses has two categories. In the northern part of Egypt, there is a high dependence on the drainage water. In the south of Delta, the dependence on shallow groundwater is dominant. Reusing water losses should be associated with a limitation to prevent / mitigate any side effects from such reuse, and therefore a plan for integrated water resources management should be developed for optimal allocation of (surface water) and (water losses) water resources in different regions. The current study develops an optimization model for the optimal allocation of surface water and shallow groundwater in Quesna irrigation district (Menoufia irrigation directorate). The optimization model minimizes total water use while considering the sufficiency of water supply, maximum allowable water supply at the head of the district, the capacity of different irrigation canals, and the permissible withdrawal from shallow groundwater. Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique is used to solve optimization model. Through GA procedures, the potential solution is evolved through consecutive generations until reaching optimal or near optimal solution. Results show that the GA procedure successfully reaches the optimal solution while maintaining different constraints. Through consecutive generations, most of the potential solutions show improvement in fitness and come closer to the minimum solution, which referred to the reliability of the obtained solution, and it was not the result of random selection. Further, the number of feasible solutions increases, referring to the reliability of the obtained solution. The study recommend applying the integrated water resources plan at different irrigation levels (irrigation districts, irrigation directorates and main canals) for optimal use of such resources, and for save use of the unofficial water resources. |
