Abstract

The usage of Taxodium distichum and Salix safsaf trees to remediate some soil contaminantsThis study was carried out in the nursery of Timber Trees Department of Sabahia , Horticultural, Research station at Alexandria, Egypt. The study lasted 18 months from May 2015 to October 2016, to investigate the uptake of soil pollutants using perennial plants, especially trees on vegetative growth, chemical composition and some wood properties of two timber trees seedlings Taxodium distichum and Salix safsaf two years old. Seedlings were moved and cultivated in plastic pots, 40 cm in length and 40 cm in diameter, filled with 18 kg soil ( one seedling/ pot), the irrigation rate (2 liter/ pot) twice times in summer and weakly in winter. The used soil was Sandy loam from the white pigment area from the Sabaghy El Baida in Kafr El-Dawar , an industrial city in El Beheira governorate on the eastern outskirts of Alexandria, about 30 km away, and the other one from the nursery of the Horticultural Research Station, Sabahia of Alexandria.- The experiment was conducted using CRD design. Two treatments were replicated three times, each repetition contained six trees.- At the end of each period (6,12 and 18months), for each treatment of the two species, total height of 6 trees were measured from ground level to the trees top,the stem diameter out bark was recorded at 5 cm above the ground, leaves number per plant were counted for the two species at the end of each period. Also, leaf area in cm2 was measured.- At the end of each period biomass for ( leaves, shoots and roots ) to determine fresh and dry weight, Also, root length shoot/ root ratio.- Specific gravity and fiber length were determined for wood of the two seedling species.- Mineral contents (N, P and K) and some heavy metals ( Cd , Pb and Zn) were determined also in plant.5.2 The obtained data showed that: - The growth of Taxodium distichum seedlings were better than Salix Safsaf seedlings in stem diameter, number of leaves, fresh and dry weights for (leaves and roots), roots length after 18 months for the contaminated soil compared with unpolluted soil.- Plant height and leaf area for seedlings of Salix sahsaf were better than in Taxodium distichum seedlings in polluted soil compared with control soil at the end of the experiment (18months).- The specific gravity for wood Salix sahsaf was bigger than in Taxodium distichum in contaminated soil after 18 months of studying . However , fiber length for wood Taxodium distichum were more longest than in wood of Salix Safsaf at the end of the experiment after 18 months for polluted soil.
