Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out during two successive seasons of 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 in a private farm located at Shubrakhet City, in Behiera Governorate, Egypt, under open field condition, using surface irrigation system.
The main objective of this study to evaluate the effect of cooling period of crown pieces treatments, seaweed extract concentrations as foliar application and their interactions on vegetative growth, yield and quality of globe artichoke ‘french’ cv.
The experimental layout was spilt plot system in a Randomized Complete Blocks Design with three replicates. Three cooling period of crown pieces treatments (i.e. Vernalization for 15 days, Vernalization for 30 days and control) were arranged in the main plots and the seaweed extract concentrations ( i.e. 250, 500, 750 mg/l and control) were considered as the sub –plots.
The obtained results could be summarized as follows:
5.1 Vegetative growth characters
• Cooling periods at 30 days; gave rise to the highest average values of vegetative growth (i.e., survival percentage, plant height, leaves fresh weight and leaves dry weight percentage), as compared to the control treatment, which gave rise to the lowest average values of all vegetative characters studied during both seasons.
• Increasing seaweed extract treatments up to 750 mg/l; recorded the highest average values of vegetative growth (i.e., survival rate, plant height, leaves fresh weight and leaves dry weight percentage), as compared to the control treatment, which gave the lowest average values of all vegetative characters studied, during both seasons.
• The interaction between both variables (cooling periods treatments and seaweed extract concentrations) exhibited significant effect on survival rate percentage, plant height , leaf fresh weight and dry weight during both seasons, but not significant for leaf dry matter percentage, during second season.
5. 2 Early and total head yield/plant
• The highest average values of head weight, number of heads/plant, early, total yield per plant and per fed, were recorded owing to increasing cooling periods up to 30 days compared to control treatment, which recorded the lowest average values, during both seasons.
• The maximum average values of early and total yield per plant and per fed, of globe artichoke were recorded due to increasing foliar applied seaweed extract up to 750 mg/l, while control treatment recorded the minimum average values, during both seasons.
• The interaction between cooling periods and seaweed extract treatments was significant pertaining head weight (g) and total early yield /fed (ton)in the both seasons, while, it exerted no significant effect on number of head / plant and early yield/plant(kg), during both seasons.
