Abstract

Advanced liver cirrhosis is associated with a decrease in serum albumin. Patients with liver cirrhosis have impaired hepatocellular function and reduced albumin synthesis. The understanding of circulatory dysfunction in patients with decompensated cirrhosis has led to the use of albumin to improve circulatory dysfunction and prevent kidney injury This study was carried out in AL-Rajhi Liver Hospital at Assiut University Hospital and other hospitals in Assiut, who regularly treat patients with liver cirrhosis. The study was conducted between October 2020 till December 2021 The current study aimed to assess physicians’ knowledge of the evidence based indications for human albumin use supported by the International Guidelines, to determine whether human albumin is used in clinical conditions not supported by solid scientific evidence, to formulate evidence based indications for human albumin use supported by the International Guidelines and to evaluate the effect of distributing these evidence based indications on physicians’ knowledge. Our survey was carried out using two tools TOOL (l) consists of two parts Part (1): Demographic data about the physicians such as: age, sex, job category, years of experience Part (2): Physicians’ knowledges about general information of albumin prescription and functions, mechanism of action of albumin in liver cirrhosis and in prevention of PPCD, renal failure after SBP, diagnosis of HRS, treatment of HRS, and other potential clinical indications for albumin. TOOL (II): Designed evidence-based indications for HA use supported by the International Guidelines. It includes general information about albumin prescription and function, mechanism of action of albumin in liver cirrhosis, prevention of PPCD, prevention of renal failure after SBP, diagnosis of HRS, treatment of HRS, other potential clinical indication for albumin. Evaluating the effect of the designed evidence-based indications for human albumin use on Physicians’ knowledges after 1 month using (tool I) in those Physicians.
