Abstract

In Egypt, dogs represent the majority of pet animals. Dogs also play an important role in house and farm guarding these animals are frequently subjected to some surgical disorders. The aim of this work is to recognize and record the most surgical disorders of the natural orifices in dogs including disorders of eyelids, external ear, mouth and teeth, nose, female genital orifice, male genital orifice, anal opening, and mammary gland. Also, to investigate and describe the cases.
The present study was carried-out on 422 dogs which examined during the period of 2 years from November 2019 to August 2021. They were collected from pet’s care center, Almanshiat Albahria unit, Almaemura management, some veterinary hospitals and units, and some private clinic in Alexandria, Egypt. Information on the frequency of various conditions is important in prioritizing health concerns in dogs. Therefore, a survey of dog owners was undertaken to gather health information. The purpose of this study was to identify the most common conditions affecting the current dog population.
from a total of 422 live dogs, the most commonly reported diseases/conditions for all live dogs across all breeds were external ear disorders (26.30%), eyelid disorders (25.11%) and female genital orifice disorder (14.45%), mouth and teeth disorders (14.21%), mammary gland disorders (11.37%), male genital orifices disorders (6.16%), and anal gland disorders (1.89%). Differences between the within breed prevalence and overall prevalence across breeds of some disorders were found. The results from this study will substantially contribute to the current understanding of disorder occurrence in Egypt dogs. It is anticipated that these results will provide advice to breeders/owners on steps that may be taken to minimise the risk of common conditions in particular breeds. Future breed-specific studies are recommended to gather more precise health information across more individual breeds.
The results of the present study showed that:
1. The incidence of the natural orifice disorders in dogs is of high prevalence.
2. The prevalence of eyelid disorders during this study appeared that the most surgical disorders were prolapse of third eyelid gland, eyelid laceration and trauma, eyelid
