Abstract

Recurrent cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) is a complex disease, known as an individual with a
history of a previous cerebrovascular stroke (CVS), and registered with a new CVA event and
80% of CVS can be prevented. Adherence to therapeutic regimen; known as the extent which the
patient‘s follow medical instructions, which may help for prevention of its recurrent. The aim:
The aim of this study was to assess factors affecting adherence to therapeutic regimens among
patients with recurrent cerebrovascular stroke. Methodology: Setting: Neuropsychiatry
department at Suez Canal University hospitals. Design: A descriptive exploratory design.
Subject: A purposive sample of ninety adult patients with recurrent CVS. Tools: Clinical data
tool to assess the patients’ demographic characteristics and medical history and Interview
questionnaire tool to assess the patients’ level of knowledge regarding CVS, patients’ level of
adherence and factors affecting adherence to therapeutic regimens among patients with recurrent
CVS. Result: All of the studied patients (100%) had an unsatisfied level of knowledge and level
of adherence regarding CVS and its recurrent. Multiple factors were related to patients’
adherence to therapeutic regimens as a patient- related factors and financial- related factors.
Conclusion: A significant correlation between patients’ total knowledge score and total
adherence score. Totally; there was no significant correlation between total adherence score and
total factors affecting adherence scores. Recommendation: Establishing cerebrovascular stroke
and its recurrent counseling, specialized professional teams to provide knowledge about
cerebrovascular stroke & its recurrent and facilities in problems resolution.
