Abstract
Abstract
The study deals with argumentative discourse in some British and American electronic newspapers editorials. It also discusses some theoretical terminology such as argument, argumentation, debate, electronic newspapers and editorials. Among the aims of the study is investigating the features that distinguish argumentative discourse from other types of discourse. The study attempts to answer the following questions: What are the distinctive features of argumentative discourse in general and those of electronic newspapers editorials in particular? How do writers use speech acts, argumentative indicators and cohesive ties to deliver well-crafted arguments? What are the common features and the differences between British and American electronic newspapers editorials? The study follows an eclectic approach which includes the pragma-dialectical approach by van Eemeren and Grootendorst (2004), and the second approach is by Halliday and Hasan (1976, 1994). The study employs the following tools: speech acts, argumentative indicators and cohesive ties. The data include five editorials from: the Independent, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The New York Times and The Washington Post. They are dated from 1/3/2020 to 1/6/2020. The findings of the study show that the writers express their views through the use of some speech acts which focus on the big picture or the position of the newspaper. Arguments are introduced by assertives and are clarified by some usage declaratives that give detailed information. Argumentative indicators are used to introduce and clarify propositions and conclusions. Cohesive ties are employed to make discourse more coherent, persuasive and effective through indicating claims, views and positions.
