Abstract

The current research aimed at evaluating sentence writing errors among primary stage pupils. To meet the objectives of the study, an EFL writing test was developed and administered to a sample of (n=132) sixth grade primary pupils at public primary schools as well as Azhari primary institutes in the academic year (2017/ 2018). A 46-item 5 point- Likert-scale questionnaire was also developed and applied to a sample of (n=38) EFL teachers, senior teachers and EFL experts. The data was analysed statistically by identifying the frequency and calculating the percentages of errors. The findings of the study demonstrated that there is a significant difference at the 0.01 level between public school pupils and Azhari institute ones in sentence writing errors favoring Azhari institute EFL pupils. Furthermore, the results of the study reported that there is a significant difference at the 0.05 level between public school pupils and Azhari institute ones in grammatical errors favouring public school pupils. The results also indicated that there is a significant difference at the 0.01 level between public school pupils and Azhari institute ones in punctuation errors favoring Azhari institute pupils. Moreover, the results revealed that there is a significant difference at the 0.01 level between public school pupils and Azhari institute ones in spelling errors favoring Azhari institute EFL pupils. The findings of the study show that EFL sixth grade primary pupils suffer weakness in sentence writing particularly in some grammatical forms, punctuation and spelling, a problem that needs to be addressed by those in charge of the educational process, especially the EFL teachers. As a result, the researcher suggests that EFL teachers use the error analysis approach in the classroom to assess the writing skill as well as other English language skills.
