Abstract Obesity continues to be among the top health concerns across the globe. Despite our failure to contain the high prevalence of obesity, we now have a better understanding of its pathophysiology, and how excess adiposity leads to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Diets remain the most popular choice that represents some of the most important clinical treatments of obesity. The present study was designed to find which is more effective in decreasing body weight, whether complete carbohydrate deprivation or decreasing the quantity of food intake to half the content or minimal dose HCG intake. Rats were divided randomly into 4 groups (6 rats each): ♦ The control group (group I): Rats in this group were given a normal rat diet for 4 weeks and divided into 2 sub-groups: group Ia (Male rats), group Ib (Female rats). ♦ Low caloric group (group II): Rats of this group were giving (100g/day) high fat& carbs but reduced the amount to half for 4 weeks and divided into 2 sub-groups: group IIa (Male rats), group IIb (Female rats). ♦ Maximal CHO deprivation group (group III): Rats in this group were given (200g/day) high fat with minimal carbs diet for 4 weeks and divided into 2 sub-groups: group IIIa (Male rats), group IIIb (Female rats). ♦ HCG small dose group (group IV): Rats in this group were given (200g/day) high fat diet with 5 IU/day of HCG for 4 weeks and divided into 2 sub-groups: group IVa (Male rats), group IVb (Female rats). Results group II (Low caloric group) showed a significant decrease in body weight, serum insulin, TC, TGs and LDL levels with a significant increase in serum leptin and HDL levels compared to control group. group III (Maximal CHO deprivation group) showed a significant decrease in body weight, serum TC, TGs and LDL levels with an increase in serum insulin, leptin and HDL levels compared to control group. group IV (HCG small dose group) showed a significant decrease in body weight, serum insulin, TC, TGs and LDL levels with a significant increase in serum leptin and HDL levels compared to control group. Female groups no significant different when compared to male groups. In conclusion, treatment of obesity with low-caloric diet, maximal CHO deprivation and HCG diet showed a great improvement in decreasing body weight, insulin sensitivity, leptin level and lipid profile. |
