Abstract

The present study was conducted on 150 male mice bred in Theodore BilharzResearch Institutefor the detection of the possible synergistic effect of risedronate sodium combination with atorvastatin on acute and chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection versus the commercially used drug spiramycin. The drug combination was used in two different doses: first combinationdosage was0.01mg/kg/dayrisedronate sodium and 1.25mg / kg / day atorvastatin, second combination dosage was 0.2mg/kg/dayrisedronate sodium and 20mg/ kg/ dayatorvastatinand each drug was also tested alone at a dose of 0.4mg/kg/day for risedronate sodium and 40mg/kg/day for atorvastatin in comparison to spiramycin which was used at a dose of 200mg/kg/day.Parasitological and histopathological assessments of the drug effect were done. Parasitological assessment was done using Giemsastaining of intraperitoneal fluid collected from acute Toxoplasma infected mice and homogenized brain from chronic Toxoplasma infected mice. Results revealed reduction of the number of Toxoplasmatachyzoitesin the intraperitoneal fluid collected from acute infection group of mice with percentage of reduction in the 5th day post infection of 86.28 %, 98.35 % 98.27% &85.03% respectively compared to infected non treated groupand spiramycin treated group showed percentage of reduction 93.66 %. In addition, examination of homogenized brain collected fromchronic Toxoplasma infected mice revealed reduced number of tissue cysts with percentage of reduction 22.61 %, 34.75 %, 78.85 %&4.32 %respectively after 5 days of treatment compared to 2.8%in spiramycin treated group
