Abstract Authors believe that tonsillectomy is one of the most frequently performed procedures performed by otolaryngologists worldwide, especially in pediatric population in order to resolve upper airway obstruction and recurrent or chronic throat infections (Silveira et al., 2003). Review of literature revealed different techniques for tonsillectomy which have been studied thoroughly, but convincing evidence in literature is still lacking as far as the optimal method of performing this surgical procedure. Globally, the objectives of clinical research going around and the points of concern that have divided the surgeons between different techniques are: operating time, intra-operative blood loss, postoperative pain, return to normal diet and activity and secondary hemorrhage. We performed a prospective randomized study that included 60 patients who were subjected to tonsillectomy. Strict inclusion criteria were followed where the indications for tonsillectomy for all cases were recurrent attacks of acute follicular tonsillitis ( 6 or more episodes per year or 3 or more episodes in two successive years ) or tonsillar hypertrophy causing sleep apnea. All the patients selected were in the interval between 6 and 20 years of age |
