Abstract

Inflammation is a response, triggered by damage to living tissues, to protect them from infection and injury as well as the consequence of such injury i.e. the necrotic cells and tissues. Although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can manage many inflammatory diseases, they have numerous side effects, such as: gastrointestinal injury, hepatotoxicity, sodium retention, obesity and osteoporosis that might cause serious health problems. As alternatives to synthetic medicines, natural products show good efficacy, few side effects and proved to be potential candidates to cure inflammatory conditions. Inflammation and oxidative stress are closely related pathophysiological processes, one of which can be easily induced by another. Thus, both processes are simultaneously found in many pathological conditions. Therefore, a lack of antioxidants that can quench the reactive free radicals, facilitates the development of degenerative diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases. One solution to this problem is to supplement the diet with antioxidant compounds that are contained in natural plant source
