Abstract

Tooth extraction is accomplished with dimensional changes of the alveolar ridge. Different procedures have been tested to prevent bone loss following tooth extraction such as immediate implant placement with and without grafting material. However, none of those procedures was able to prevent the bone loss following extraction. Hence, the present study is a randomized clinical study to assess the radiographic bony changes & clinical implant stability in the socket shield technique with immediate temporization vs conventional immediate implant with immediate temporization.Twenty patients with non-restorable maxillary teeth in the esthetic zone indicated for implant placement were selected from the outpatient clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University.Ten patients received 15 implants using the socket shield technique with immediate temporization and the other ten received 15 implants using conventional immediate implant placement with immediate temporization. All patients were regularly assessed clinically and radiographically up to 6 months postoperatively, where they received their final prosthesis. The mean horizontal bone loss for control group was 0.28±0.14 and was 0.12±0.07 for study group while the mean vertical bone loss for control group was 0.77±0.34 and was 0.34±0.12 for study group. The mean implant stability quotient for control group was 66.4±5.5 and increased to 75.0±4.6 after 6 months, while it was 68.6±3.7 for study group and increased to 76.7±3.4 after 6 months. The median and range of the pink esthetic score of the control group was 13 (11-14) immediately and decreased to 9 (6-11) after 6 months, while the median and range of the pink esthetic score for the study group was 11(10-14) immediately and increased to 12 (10-14) after 6 months
