Abstract Background:Charcot arthropathy is a destructive process, most commonly affecting joints of the foot and ankle in diabetics with peripheral neuropathy. Bony fragmentation, fracture, and dislocation progress to deformity, bony prominence, and instability.This often causes ulceration and deep infection that may necessitate amputation. Aim and objectives: The objective of the study is to assess the results of treating charcot ankle with fusion by retrograde tibiocalcaneal nail. Subjects and methods: Twenty patients were prospectively studied, and all of them were clinically diagnosed to have charcot ankle arthropathy. All of them were enrolled in the study which was carried out at the orthopedic department of KasrAl-Aini hospital, Shebien El- Koom teaching hospital during the period from December 2017 to March 2020, Preoperative Assessment of all patients by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Scale (AOFAS),In postoperative follow up we use the modified AOFAS score which its maximum is 86 because hind motion and sagittal motion excluded because of arthrodesis. Results:In the total score we found significant improvement in the score.Thereis increase in the mean score from 33.6 to 73.15 (p < 0.001) which considered clinically and statistically significant |
