Abstract

In this study, five microalgal species (Chlorella vulgaris, Dictyochloropsis splendida, Chlamydomonas sp., Spirulina platensis, and Nostoc linckia) were screened for lipid production. The growth rate and lipid content of C. vulgaris and D. splendida were significantly higher than those of the other tested species (p< 0.05). Furthermore, the maximum biomass and lipid yield of C. vulgaris and D. splendida resulted from cultivation on BG11 medium. Also, the effect of stress culture conditions and gamma radiation on the growth and lipid production of promising microalgal species were studied. Plackett{u2013}Burman design (PBD) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) were used to optimize medium components to enhance lipid production. The extracted lipids showed antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer activities. Also, the fatty acid analysis strongly proved that these species, are considered as promising feedstocks for biodiesel production
