Abstract

Background:The peritoneum is the serous membrane lining the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal diseases, either benign or malignant, represent a spectrum of entities with overlapping clinical and imaging appearances. DWI MRI of the abdomen and pelvis has an increasing role in detection and differentiating between benign and malignant peritoneal lesions. Methods: Forty patients who have peritoneal disease did MRI abdomen and pelvis. After that, recording of the signal of the lesion in DWI and ADC map with calculation of its average ADC value were done and correlated with its pathological diagnosis. Results:The mean ADC valuewas 1.5±0.5 x10⁻³mm²/sec for benign peritoneal lesions while it was 0.9±0.3 x10⁻³mm²/sec for malignant lesions which indicated a significant difference (p value < 0.00001) between them. For that reason, we suggest DWI MRI of abdomen and pelvis as a diagnostic method in problematic patients with peritoneal lesions. Conclusion:Peritoneal disease can be caused by a wide spectrum of clinically and radiologically overlapping pathologies, DWI is useful as a diagnostic aid in differentiating between the benign and malignant peritoneal lesions
