Abstract

Introduction: Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) constitutes a small part of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), yet has a disproportionally higher rate of mortality. Despite being grouped under JIA, it is considered to be a multifactorial auto-inflammatory disease. Calprotectin concentrations are significantly increased in children with an active systemic-onset JIA, supporting its use as a diagnostic tool for systemic-onset JIA and allowing these patients to be distinguished from those with other inflammatory diseases. Objective: The present study was conducted to estimate and evaluate serum calprotectin in JIA patients and to assess its association with disease activity score. Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Pediatric Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic of Cairo University Children Hospital; including 60 patients of SJIA subdivided into 30 patients with active SJIA and 30 patients with inactive SJIA in addition to 30 age and sex matched children as a control group. Detailed history and physical examination were done. An informed written consent was obtained from parents before enrollment. Serum calprotectin level was assessed in all patients and controls. Results:Calprotectin has diagnostic value for SJIA with 52%sensitivity and 90% specificity while serum Ferritin has diagnostic value for SJIA with53% sensitivity and 100% specificity.There is no significant difference between active and inactive JIA as regard Calprotectin level
