Abstract

This study attempts to examine a benchmark for media system that Egypt can take as a model to surpass its transitional political phase. Egypt has moved from a totalitarian regime to a transitional democracy especially after January 25 and June 30 revolutions as there had been public demand for safeguarding the independence of the media by decreasing direct and indirect government interference and establishing a regulatory system for media outlets. The problem that is tackled in this study is that Egypt has been in the transitional phase for a long period. Accordingly, a benchmark is needed to identify Egypt media system by examining the media systems in various countries that have passed through the same media transitional phase to know the best media results and the consequences that these countries have attained. The methodology for this study is qualitative, as in-depth interviews were conducted with media scholars and experts, business executives, newspapers managing directors and editors in chief to examine the status-quo of the Egyptian media system and the different paths that can be considered to surpass the transitional phase. 5 The study intended to examine how the media policies were managed during the transitional phase as this transition included not only media systems, but also political and economic aspects. The time frame for this study was from July 2017 to November 2019. Accordingly, the topic chosen was about the media system shifts in transitional societies
