Abstract

Objective: to determine risk factors affecting early outcome, in-hospital mortality and complications at neonatal cardiac intensive care unit in Children Hospital, Cairo University. Methodology: This is an observational prospective and retrospective study was carried out on 157 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria admitted to neonatal cardiac intensive care unit over one year period ( from August 2017 to August 2018 ). Results: Out of 157 patients admitted to neonatal cardiac ICU unit in children hospital Cairo University from august 2017 to august 2018; 50 cases representing (31.8%) were females and 107 cases representing (68.2%) were males. Weight of the patients varies from 2.0 kg to 10.0 kg with median weight of 3.1 kg. Age of the patients varies from 0.0 months to 18 months with median age of 0.6 months. (30.6%) were diagnosed as dextro-transposition of great arteries, (20.4 %) were diagnosed as pulmonary atresia, (19.7%) were diagnosed as patent ductus arteriosus or septal defects, (8.3%) were diagnosed as left heart obstruction, (7.6%) were diagnosed as tetralogy of Fallot, (5.1 %) were diagnosed as arrhythmias and (8.3 %) were diagnosed as Ebestien anomaly (4cases),criss cross heart(2 cases),truncus arteriosus (1case), double outlet right ventricle (3cases) ,total anomalous pulmonary venous return± pulmonary atresia (2cases) and hypo plastic arch(1case). about (46.4%) of cases were catheterized, (9.5%) were surgically treated and (43.9%) had no intervention. Rashkind operation represents 45.2 % of the catheter intervention. VSD closure operation represents 40 % of the surgical intervention. Complications encountered were sepsis (33%), pulmonary (32%), neurological (19%), cardiac (10%), vascular (9%), DIC (5%) and renal complications (3%)
