Abstract

This study aims to investigate the e ect of di erent parameters on both rectangular pulsed and dimmable optical impulse modulation techniques. These parameters are: the dimming target, d, the pulse duty cycle, ”, the signal levels,`a and ha, the modulation order, L, the normalized delay spread, DN, the signal-to-noise ratio, SNR, and the bit-error rate, BER. The dimming target, d, has been introduced as the main controller of the signal levels and the pulse duty cycle of the system transmitter according to the required modulation technique and order, L. The well known exponentially decaying model has been used to model the optical di use channels, where BER and data rate, Rb, analysis has been performed using (MATLAB R2014a) software. The mentioned modulation techniques have been compared to each other from two points of view. The rst is the BER achieved by each, under varying d and di erent values of SNR and L, and the second reported metric is the maximum achievable data rate by each technique for some commonly desirable BER for di erent values of L. Hence, for some given values of d and SNR, one can decide the preferable technique and order, which maximize the data rate and minimize the error rate. Dimmable optical impulse modulation (DOIM) was shown to be the modulation technique that should be chosen for almost all values of d and SNR
