Abstract

Objective: To assess quality of life (QOL) after transnasal, endoscopic skull base surgery and to assess the incidence of post operative complications. Patients and methods: This is a prospective study, twenty participants were recruited through patients aging between 9 to 61 years old, skull base lesions or skull base defect, presenting at otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic at faculty of medicine, Cairo university. All patients completed two skull base questionnaires throughout two visits. The first visit, after 1 weak post operative at outpatient clinic at kasr elaini hospital and second one after one month to assess post operative complications and to assess quality of life after skull base surgeries. We devided the patients according to their mean score into two groups. group A (Good group) included patients who achieved QOL scores from 17 to 34 and group B (bad group) included patients who achieved scores from 35 to 51. Follow up was done after one week and one month post operative. Results: Regarding post operative complications, one case (5%) developed CSF leak, one case(5%) developed intracranial hematoma and they were managed conservatively. Minor hemorrhage developed in 5 cases(25%) and transient diabetes insipidus developed in 6 cases (30%). Regarding modified quality of life questionnaire, ten cases were of the bad group after one week. The mean age of this bad group was 49.30 years. The bad group is significantly affected by the older age as (P value=0.003). Mean time of pack removal post operative was 3.60 days in the bad group. This longer time of pack removal in the bad group significantly significant as (P value=0.043). The mean duration of the post operative ICU was 1.50 days in the bad group. The bad group is significantly affected by longer time of ICU admission as (P value= 0.029). Difference between quality of life score after 1 week and 1 month was statistically highly significant as P value < 0.001
